All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WALTER LEE BEALE Walter Lee Beale, born April 18, 1863, the son of the late William and Jane Pittman Beale of Franklin community, died Friday morning at Memorial Hospital, Richmond, after a prolonged illness. Mr. Beale was educated in the schools of his community and at Reynoldson Academy at Gates, N.C. Returning to Franklin from school at Gates he married Miss Anne Miller and went to live in the Handsom community. To this union one daughter, Miss Elsie Beale of Franklin, was born. Mrs. Annie Miller Beale, having died September 13, 1891, in April 1893, he married Miss Fannie Matthews, who preceded him in death six weeks ago. Seven children were born to this union, Mrs. R.L. Young of Franklin, William Emory Beale of Holland, Mrs. James K. Gulley of Goldsboro, N.C., Ryland Beale of Courtland, Carroll H. Beale of Chowan College, Murfreesboro, N.C., W.M. Beale of Franklin, and Miss Laura Beale of Exmore, all of whom survive, as do 12 grandchildren and 20 nieces and nephews, and one brother, J.W. Beale, of Franklin. Early in life Mr. Beale became a member of Bethany Christian Church and was a communicant until the church was discontinued. Upon moving back to Franklin community in 1920 he and Mrs. Beale joined Sycamore Baptist Church, where he held a useful membership until his death. He was one of the county’s most prominent and successful business men, his consideration and generosity endearing his to those who sought his help. Funeral services were conducted from his residence, Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson, the Rev. L.F. Paulette of Smithfield, and the Rev. Floyd P. Davis of Courtland. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin. Active pallbearers were: Roger I. Beale, D.T. Prince, James I. Beale, Wesley Beale, Lee Beale of Richmond. James A.
