Son of the late William Evans Beale and Mrs. Garrie Jones Beale, he was born, reared, and spent practically his whole life at the Beale homestead. His ancestry extending back through long lines of prominent families of his section, he had many relatives there, at Como, South Quay, and throughout this and Nansemond counties. He is survived in his immediate family by his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Lillian Johnson of Hanover County; one daughter, Miss Lillian Overton Beale, and one son, William E. Beale, Jr. Besides these, there are two nieces, Misses Louise and Martha Jones, and one nephew, Roger Jones, who made their home with him after the death of their mother; a niece, Mrs. Edith Abbitt Rose, who passed her early life, after her mother’s death, in his home and a sister, Mrs. A.H. Pettigrew, of Richmond. Happy in his married life, he was at his best in the home, from which he was never absent at night, through many years. Assuming the care of his father’s family at an early age, he was the comfort and stay of his widowed mother and sisters at a time when youth is generally carefree. His life was clean and upright, and his indulgence of those dependent upon him, was often to the neglect of himself - thus a true son, brother, husband and father. The funeral was from the home Saturday, February 2, conducted by Rev. Dr. H.J. Goodwin of Suffolk, assisted by Rev. N.E. Taylor of Norfolk and Rev. L.F. Paulette of Smithfield. As a part of the service, the hymns, "Sun of My Soul," "Asleep in Jesus" and "Now the Laborer’s Task is "O’er," were read. The many beautiful floral offerings and the large crowd assembled, attested the esteem in which he was held. Burial was in the family cemetery on the Beale plantation. Honorary pallbearers were mostly lifelong friends and childhood playmates of Mr. Beale. The active pallbearers were: Cecil Vaughan, 3rd, Julian B. Worrell, W.A. Jones, Philip A. Jones, Roswell Hart, T.H. Birdsong, Jr., W.J. Manry and E.L. Fiers. Those from a distance who attended the funeral of Mr. Beale were: J.Z. Johnson and son, J.Z. Jr., Mr. and Mrs. M.D. Hoge, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hancock, W.B. Walton, Jr., all of Hanover County; Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Johnson, Jr. and daughters, Misses Sarah Frances and Elizabeth, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Johnson, Mrs. C.O. Johnson, J.R. Johnson, Bernard Johnson, Mrs. Richard Bell and daughters, Misses Agnes and Margaret, and Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Pettigrew, all of Richmond; Mrs. John D. Rose of Henderson, N.C., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Walton and daughter, Susan, of Raleigh; Dr. R. Terrell Johnson of Manassas, Virginia, and A.M. Johnson of Newport News.
