Bell died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fannie B. Grizzard, in Courtland Saturday, July 6, in the 71st year of his life. He was the son of the late W.A. Bell and Mrs. Harriett Bell and all his life had been spent in this community and in Courtland where he was one of the best-loved citizens. On December 21, 1882, he married Miss Elizabeth Briggs of this county who preceded him to the grave a number of years ago. In early manhood he united with Trinity M.E. Church, remaining a member there until the church was burned when he moved his membership to Courtland. His religious life was much more than mere affiliation with a church; it was lived in all human relationships as husband, father, friend and neighbor. He believed that the kind work was of more value than criticism and that practical Christianity found it highest expression in unselfish service to his family and in neighborliness. Mr. Bell had a large capacity for making friends, both young and old, and his kind and genial presence will be greatly missed. The funeral services conducted by his Pastor, Rev. S.E. Jones, assisted by Rev. Kenneth E. Burke of the Baptist Church, were from his late residence. Members of the Methodist and Baptist choirs sang a number of favorite hymns. Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery. A large attendance of relatives and friends and a great profusion of beautiful flowers bore feeling testimony to the esteem in which this good man was held. He is survived by eight children, Mrs. G.W. Seal, Misses Mary, Elizabeth and Pauline Bell of Richmond, Miss Eunice Bell of Coeburn, Sheriff T.B. Bell, W.A. Bell and Mrs. Fannie Grizzard of Courtland; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Turner and Miss Zella Bell of Courtland; two brothers Tom Bell of Bolton, N.C., and Paul Bell of Warrenton, N.C., besides a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was also a brother of the late Sheriff C.A. Bell of this county. The body bearers were: H.A. Gillette, H.C. Edwards, Geo. B. Vick, Jas. H. Joyner, C.W. Parker, H.D. Babb, Lloyd M. Raiford and W.T. Pittman. The honorary bearers were selected from a large number of friends of the Bell family.
