PETERSBURG, VA., Apr. 12.- The body of John J. Bowles, a prominent citizen of Southampton county, and widely known in this state, who had been missing for a week, has been found in the woods near his home with a terrible gash in his throat and a razor clutched in his hand. It is supposed that he committed suicide on account of financial difficulties. John J. BOWLES, of Southampton Co., suicide Apr 1883, near his home, age ca. 30*, "The Richmond (VA) Dispatch," Apr. 13, 1883 (Vol. 63, No. 88), p. 3, col. 5 *Additional information: He appears in the 1880 Census (Boykins Dist., e.d. 101, p. 50 fam #520) as a farm laborer, age 27, with wife Bettie (23); adj.
