WILLIAM THOMAS BOWLES

  William Thomas Bowles, 82, a lifelong resident of the Handsom community, 
died early Thursday morning, November 1, after several years of failing 
health. 

   He was the son of the late James and Mary Jones Bowles of this county, and 
husband of Mrs. Mattie Maddrey Bowles.  He was a member of the Sunbeam Baptist 
Church. 

   Surviving him are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. John Outland of Portsmouth 
and Mrs. R.G. Harris of Richmond; three sons, Walter L. Bowles of Washington 
D.C. and Jack and Thomas Bowles, both of New York City; three grandchildren 
and two great grandchildren; two brothers, A.J. Bowles of Portsmouth and D.F. 
Bowles of Suffolk; and one sister, Mrs. C.D. Crumpler of Handsom. 

   Funeral services for Mr. Bowles were held at the Sunbeam Baptist Church at 
2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, with Rev. R.L. Chadwick officiating, assisted 
by Rev. R.B. Moore.  Burial was in the family cemetery, the pallbearers being 
nephews of the deceased; Bennie, Harvey, Horace, Jasper, Odell, Reuben and 
Rosser Bowles and Jack Gardner.
