She was a proud, strong, independent Southern woman who loved her family and the rural life which she enjoyed as a lifelong resident of Southampton County. She was a daughter of the late Willie Waverly and Mary Jane "Mae" Gray Nurney and the widow of Raymond Alton "Pete" Ballard. She was also predeceased by a brother and two sisters, William Henry Nurney, Gladys Nurney Whitehead and Wilma Nurney Bryant. Survivors include her son, Raymond Alton "Al" Ballard Jr. and his wife, Carole Hofmeyer Ballard, of Portsmouth; two granddaughters, Allison Hughes Ballard of Wilmington, N.C., and Ann Ballard Zinni of Alexandria, Va. Other survivors include a sister, Margaret Nurney Magette; brother-in-law, Joseph Kindred Magette; nephew, Joseph Kindred Magette Jr.; a sister-in-law, Helen Newsome Nurney; nieces, Linda Nurney Vick and Kay Nurney Pope; a nephew, William Henry "Bill" Nurney Jr.; and brother-in-law, Gillette Thomas Bryant; niece, Mary Betty Bryant Vaughan and nephew, Gillette Thomas Bryant Jr. All reside in Southampton County. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and suggests that memorials be made to Newsoms United Methodist Church, any Southampton County Volunteer Rescue Squad or to the charity of the donor's choice.
