All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOHN VANN BOONE John Vann Boone, well-known Franklin citizen, died at the home of his son, Joe Gay Boone, in the Councill apartments here this morning at 8:40 o’clock. He had been in ill-health for many months and was in his 62nd year. Funeral services will be held from his late home Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by Rev. R.D. Stephenson and Rev. L.T. Williams, and interment will be made in the family plot at Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, N.C. Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythians will conduct the burial service, Mr. Boone being a loyal member of that order for many years and at one time being Vice Grand Chancellor for Virginia. He was the only son of the late Captain Thos. D. Boone and Mrs. Willie Vann Boone of Winton, N.C., and is survived by his wife; four sons, Thos. D., Vann, Lloyd and Joe Boone; two daughters, Mrs. H.S. Valentine of Brunswick County, Va., and Mrs. Leslie B. Matthews of Norfolk and by three sisters, Mrs. B.E. Copeland and Miss Willie Boone of Ahoskie and Mrs. Charles Mitchell of Sanford, N.C., besides a large and prominent family connection in Eastern Carolina and Virginia. ******************************************************************************** The funeral of John V. Boone of this town, whose death was mentioned in last week’s News, took place Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock in the home of his son, Joe Gay Boone, in Clay Street. The services were conducted by Mr. Boone’s Pastor, Rev. R. D. Stephenson of the Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. L.T. Williams of the Methodist Church. Special selections were sung by a quartette composed of Mrs. F.E. Howell, Mrs. H.G. Cobb, J. Edward Moyler and G.M. Whitley. Interment was made in the family burial plot in the cemetery at Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, N.C., within a short distance of the scene of Mr. Boone’s birthplace. There by the graveside, his cousin, Dr. W.V. Savage and John Boone being boyhood friends and playmates, born and reared in the old Buckhorn community and their parents sleep side by side in the old churchyard. The body bearers were friends and Pythian brothers of long standing: A.L. Gardner, J.R. Howell, I.E. Howell, Jachin Forbes, C.W. Gary, J. Emmett Moyler, Captain W.R. Hayes, and R.H. Harrell. The entire membership of Franklin Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias acted as honorary pallbearers and nearly all of them were in attendance besides a large company of friends from Franklin, Como and other places.
