BAIN John Walter Bain, one of Southampton County's best citizen and a man greatly beloved by all who knew him, died at his home "Oak Grove" near Ivor December 24, 1937, in his 86th year after an illness of two weeks. Mr. Bain was a native of Sussex County, the son of the late J.N. and Mrs. Nancy Bain. He had lived the greater part of his long and useful life on the farm where he died, and we have not known many men of finer character than Walter Bain, and few indeed who have exemplified so thoroughly that well-deserved title of Christian Gentleman. Mrs. Mattie Bristow Bain, his wife, died several years ago, as did a daughter, Mrs. Amy Bain Darden. He is survived by one son, W. Tucker Bain of Wakefield; by three daughters, Mrs. B.B. Herbert of Norfolk, Mrs. Armistead Whitley of Smithfield and Miss Virgie Bain who lived with him; by Miss Lou Kitchen who has made her home with the Bain family since early childhood; three grandsons, and four granddaughters, besides a host of friends. He had been a consistent member of Millfield Baptist Church for many years, and the church being at present without a pastor, funeral services were conducted from his home on Christmas Day by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin. Burial was made in the family cemetery on the homestead, and there were many from the county and beyond who came to sorrow for the passing of their friend. The active pallbearers were: J.H. Felts, E.V. Stephenson, B.F. Boothe, Thos. N. Pulley, Armistead Whitley, B.B. Herbert, B.P. Taylor and Col. R.F. Bain of Wakefield. Honorary pallbearers were selected from friends of the family.
