BRISTOW BAIN Sorrow fell upon the home at "Oak Grove" when early Sunday morning, December 3rd, the death angel claimed as its own Mrs. Mattie Bristow Bain, age 67 years, who had been ill for a week, first being taken with a chill, but having been in feeble health for more than a year. Mrs. Bain was a devoted wife and mother and with the glow of her spirit was the sunshine of her home. All that loving hands could do was done for her comfort, but the Lord doeth all things well. He gives and He taketh away. She was a faithful member of Millfield Baptist Church for 47 years, where she attended regularly and was a teacher of the Ladies Adult Class of a number of years. She is survived by her husband, J.W. Bain; one son, Tucker Bains, who lives near Wakefield; four daughters Mrs. B.B. Herbert of Norfolk, Mrs. S.A. Whitley of Smithfield, Mrs. S.A. Darden of Sedley and Miss Virgie Bain, and by Miss Lou Kitchen, who had made her home with this family since early childhood and whose devotion to Mrs. Bain was that of a daughter for a mother; one sister, Mrs. Ida Bain of Norfolk, besides a host of relatives and friends. The community sympathizes with the entire family in their bereavement and in the hour of sadness they are commended to the Heavenly Father Who alone can heal their broken hearts. Burial services were conducted Monday afternoon at 230 o’clock by Rev. G.C. Smith of Petersburg, a former and much loved pastor of this family and the community as a whole. "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" were softly and sweetly sung by Miss Lona Boothe, Mrs. E.V. Stephenson, E. Jerome Raiford and Rev. G.C. Smith. In the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends the form was committed to its last resting place in the family cemetery with many beautiful flowers placed on the mound, there to await the Resurrection Morn. The pallbearers were: active, Gay Bain, B.B. Herbert, S.A. Whitley, John Bain, Willie Bryant, Herbert Branch, Edgar Stephenson, Burrell Boothe, F.P. Pulley, C.L. Davis, F.H. Stephenson, T.O. Camp, E.C. Pittman, C.B. Kello and Irvin Williams. Martha "Mattie" E. (BRISTOW; Mrs. John W.)
