Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 20, 1953 at 11:00 am at the Baker Funeral Home by Dr. Sparks W. Melson. Burial was in the family cemetery at the Walter Bain place near Ivor. He for many years, was secretary of the American Peanut Corporation and at the time of his death, was vice president of the Dixie Guano Company and a member of the board of directors of the Norfolk Savings and Loan Association. Several years ago, he was partly incapacitated by illness. Unable to walk, he went to this office in the American Bank Building in a wheelchair. Despite his handicap, he was able to transact his business affairs practically unhampered. In his wheelchair and accompanied by an attendant, he became a familiar figure in downtown Suffolk and a popular one, too. He always had a cheery word of greeting for his friends and even casual acquaintances and always he was feeling "just fine". The American Peanut Corporation, a shelling concern with far flung interests, was liquidated several years ago and business matters incident to this action occupied much of his time during his last years. After about a year and a half, his illness became worse and he was forced to go to Obici Memorial Hospital, where he died Sunday afternoon, January 18, 1953.
