(Ernestine Baines Brown) Brown of Franklin has been officially notified of the death of her nephew Willie R. Baines, in France of lobar pneumonia. He was a resident of Franklin for several years and volunteered from this town in Company "I" in June, 1917, serving with the company at Newport News and Camp McClellan, Ala. and going overseas with his contingent in June of this year. He possessed many friends here who will be distresses to learn of his death while in the service of his county. He was a member of the Franklin Methodist Church and is represented on the service flag of the church by a golden star. Mrs. Brown received the following letter of sympathy from the chaplain of Mr. Baines' regiment, conveying the intelligence of his death: Mrs. Ernice Brown; Franklin, Va. Dear Mrs. Brown, This is to notify you of the death of Willie Baines. He died in one of the hospitals in France and was buried on September 27. Everything possible was done by the doctors to save his life but in vain. At the hospital his every want was attended to and he passed away peacefully and quietly. All the honor of a true soldier was his. He was given a military funeral, when the salute was fired and "taps", the sound to sleep, was blown and an American flag covered his caskekt. Willie was a good soldier and died in the great cause of liberty and justice. With his commander's sympathy with you and your family in your great loss. May God grant rest to this noble boy. Again with sincerest sympathy, I remain, Very sincerely, JOSEPH A. MORRIS, Chaplain, 2nd Infantry. Willie R. BAINES, WW-I Army volunteer, d.
