Holland & Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert D. Fridley of High Street United Methodist Church and Dr. Ira D. Hudgins of Franklin Baptist Church. Burial was in Southampton Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Clifton Barnes, Harvey Cutchins, Charles Beaton, Jesse McClenny, T.C. Holland Jr., and G.E. Pillow. Benton, 83, died Friday morning in Southampton Memorial Hospital. A native of Nansemond County, he was a son of Richard Eugene and Mrs. Elizabeth Holland Benton and the husband of Mrs. Irene Daughtrey Benton. He was a member of High Street Methodist Church and a retired dairyman. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Garland Benton and Edward Benton of Richmond and William Benton of Newark, Del., a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Zoellna of Bethel, Ohio; a brother, J.C. Benton of Gates, N.C. and five grandchildren.
