All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARTHA ANN WINBORNE BURBAGE Mrs. Thomas Irving Burbage, member of an old and prominent Como, N.C., family, died in a Norfolk hospital May 28 after a long illness. Mrs. Burbage, who was 75 years of age, was the daughter of the late Major Samuel Darden Winborne and Mrs. Mary Pretlow Winborne of Como, being educated at the famous old Buckhorn Academy, taught for so many years by the late Captain Julian Henri Picot; at Oxford Seminary and Chowan College, Murfreesboro. On January 6, 1887, she was married to Dr. Thomas I. Burbage of Franklin, who died in 1928 after a long and useful life as physician in the Como community. Mrs. Burbage was a lifelong and consistent member of the Buckhorn Baptist Church at Como. Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. J.R. Campbell of Plymouth, N.C., Mrs. H.E. Bailey of Newsoms, Mrs. J.B. Campbell of Wilmington, N.C.; three sons, Landon W. and Thomas I. Burbage of Baltimore and S. T. Barbage; one brother, S.P. Winborne of Como; six nephews, Stanley Winborne of Raleigh, Roger M. Winborne of Lenoir, Robert W. Winborne of Roanoke, B.B. Winborne of Murfreesboro, Winborne Savage of Norfolk, W.E. Massenburg of Rocky Mount; seven nieces, Miss Mary Lee Savage of Norfolk, Mrs. W.P. McBain and Mrs. Julian Gary of Norfolk, Mrs. J.B. Majette and Miss Dora Winborne of Como, Miss Mary Winborne of Burlington and Mrs. W.J.M. Holland, Jr. of Franklin. Funeral services were held from the Franklin Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock in the presence of a large assemblage of friends, Joel Cooke Holland singing during the service "Have Thine Own Way, Lord." The rites were conducted by a former pastor of Como, Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Henderson, N.C., assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the local church and Rev. C.P. Cleveland of Newsoms. Burial was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery here, the bearers being: H. McDonald Spiers, R.A. Majette, Julian Worrell, Rosser Bryant, Jr., all of Como, Jno. B. Darden, Jr., and J.L. Dail of Newsoms, Dr. Burton J. Ray and Dr. J.C. Rawls. The casket was mantled with a pall of white carnations and Gypsophila. [Martha Ann (WINBORNE; Mrs. Thomas I.)
