When but a small boy he lost his mother, and she was soon followed to the grave by his father, leaving the orphan to make his way through the strenuous days succeeding the Civil War. In early manhood he married Miss Louise Booth of Sussex County, Va. and from that happy union were born five children, all of whom survive him. They are B.B. Briggs of Suffolk, W.J. Briggs of Smithfield, Alwyn E. Briggs of Sebrell, Garland B. Briggs of Princeton University and Mrs. H.L. Gardner of Suffolk. A few years ago, the loved wife and mother was claimed by death and the happy household broken up. Later he remarried and is survived by his widow, who was Mrs. Cora N. Sammons. For the past few years his stalwart frame had been wrecked by the inroad of insidious disease and he suffered much, but bore his affliction with cheerfulness and patience, always ready to greet neighbors and friends with kind works and welcome smiles. His popularity is best attested by the large concourse of citizens of this and surrounding counties who were present at his obsequies. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.R. Johnson of the Courtland Baptist church, assisted by Rev. H.L. Weston of the M.E. Church. "Going down the Valley" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul" his favorite hymns, were sung by Mrs. Jas. T. Gillette, Mrs. Sallie Richardson, W.E. Darden, and Herbert Yates. The interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, the active pallbearers being N.T. Smith, Charles W. Williams, Hugh A. Gillette, Z.A. Faison, James T. Gillette, Dr. I.P. Gilbert, William Rollison and B.E. Herbert. One brother, W.S. Briggs of Southampton County, and two sisters, Mrs. A.M. Simmons of Southampton and Mrs. T.B. Marshall of Windsor, Va., and six grandchildren, together with a host of other relatives, remain to mourn his death. The out-of-town relatives and friends who attended funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Marshall, Windsor, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Wilcox and Miss Elsie Wilcox of Waverly, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Howard, Mrs. W.N. Diehl, C.E. Herbert and B.E. Herbert of Norfolk, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Pace and Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Pace of Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Jones and Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Ellison of Suffolk.
