All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JAMES ROBERT BROOKS James Robert Brooks, 79, lifelong resident of Southampton County, died at his home near Courtland on Sunday, October 9, after suffering ill health for over a year. Mr. Brooks was a retired employee of Planters Nut and Chocolate Company, Suffolk, and was a member of the Courtland Baptist Church and the Men’s Bible Class. He was the son of the late Sidney and Elmer Kitchen Brooks of Southampton County and the husband of Mrs. Vassie Bradshaw Brooks of Courtland. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. J.J. Dickens of Williamsburg, Mrs. Elmer Roberts and Miss Helen Brooks, both of Courtland; three sons, James B. Brooks of Chevy Chase, Md., Davis Lee Brooks and Thomas Brooks, both of Danville; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Courtland Baptist Church by Rev. L.M. Kanipe pastor of the church. Interment was in the Newsoms Cemetery. Pallbearers were E.D. Priggen, O.H. Poates, G.L. Bryant, D.R. Kitchen, I.F. Sprague, E.M. Whitfield, J.B. Bryant and L.B. Bryant. Honorary pallbearers were his Sunday school class and friends of the family.
