It is with pain we announce the death of John E. Briggs, esq., of Southampton county, Va. He was born on the 29th of October, 1827, and died on the night of the 22nd of November, 1861; aged 34 years and 24 days. Dutiful as a [illegible] as a husband and father, kind at a master [illegible] as a neighbor, he had endeared himself to all [illegible] The people of his county had honored him [illegible] confidence as a Justice of the Peace, which office [illegible] to fill, with fidelity and satisfaction, to the [illegible] death. He has left an aged mother, a widow [illegible] children, to mourn an irreparable loss. Oct. 4, 1861, p. 3) is posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/obits/b620t3ob.txt Find a Grave Memorial #31459210 identifies the "DOLLY EDWARDS BRIGGS" on the cemetery list [no dates] as his wife. Rather, his wife (1833 - 1913) 2m. 19 Dec 1867 Thomas J. FOX; they are buried in Emporia Cemetery. John d. intestate. His estate was administered by his father-in-law Nathan N. THOMAS; there were "Sundry debts due the deceased which he has been unable to collect on account of the stay law." The account current was ordered recorded 13 Feb 1863. (Southampton Co. WB17:636-38 &c.) Peter EDWARDS left will 26 Apr 1855, proved 15 Aug 1859, naming his son-in-law Benjamin E. POPE & John E. BRIGGS as executors. Peter bequeathed to John "the old plantation" he then farmed, a number of slaves, and forgiveness of any debts owned to Peter - provided he "support and take good care of his mother Nancy Briggs during her life." (Southampton Co. WB16:555-56 &c.) Peter's daughter Caroline R. (EDWARDS THORPE) POPE left will & codicil 18 Apr 1895, proved 19 Aug 1895. She bequeathed in Item 2 to John's mother, during her life, interest on six $1000 bonds of the Georgia, North Carolina & Northern R.R., guaranteed by the Seaboard & Roanoke & Raleigh & Gaston R.R.
