BURGESS DIES AT SEDLEY HOME D.M. Burgess, gallant Confederate veteran and night watchman for the Supreme Court of Appeals for thirty-five years, died yesterday at the home of his son- in-law, Dr. R.L. Raiford, Sedley, Va. Although 85 years old at the time of his death, Mr. Burgess retired from his long service of the State only last March, when he became suddenly ill while on duty. Court attaches received news of his death with deep sorrow and marvelled anew at the great fortitude and physical endurance which marked the old soldier's bearing until he succumbed to his sudden illness. The war left him crippled. After serving the desperate fighting at Gettysburg and the retreat into Virginia, he lost a leg at Rappahannock Station, now Remington, Va., while a member of the artillery unit, which he joined at Fluvanna, his home, at the outbreak of the war. But Mr. Burgess gave no evidence of the infirmities of age. Court attaches recalled yesterday how he trudged bravely on his crutches up the steep incline to Broad Street, and back to his post at night, in all kinds of weather. Mr. Burgess is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary A. Burgess, one sister and a daughter, Mrs. Raiford. The funeral will be held today at Sedley. ****************************************************************************** CAPTAIN DANIEL MORGAN BURGESS Captain D.M. Burgess, as he was best known by his comrades and most intimate friends, a native of Fluvanna County and for the last 35 years a resident of Richmond, where he held a position of trust in the State Library until April, 1923, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.L. Raiford, of Sedley on Monday, December 2, in his 85th year. Capt. Burgess enlisted in the Fluvanna Artillery at the beginning of the War Between the States and his division under command of General Pickett took active part in the memorial charge of Gettysburg in July 1863. On the return of Lee’s men to Virginia he was wounded at the battle of Kelly’s Ford and as a result lost his right limb, causing him to go on crutches for the remainder of his life. His bravery as a soldier was never questioned as evidence by the fact that he continued at his post and fired the cannon that was being loaded after he himself was struck by the shell that caused his wound. Captain Burgess belonged to the old Burgess family of "Locust Grove," Fluvanna County. His mother, Miss Julia Lindsay of "The Mount," Fairfax County, was descended from the old family of that name of Revolutionary fame. A courtly old Virginia gentleman of the old school, remembering and revering the past but living abreast of the present, his genial smile and abounding courtesy had endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him since moving to this county last April when his declining years forced him to give up his position in Richmond. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary A. Burgess; his daughter, Mrs. R.L. Raiford, and three grandsons, Morgan Burgess and Fletcher Lindsay Raiford of Sedley and Fred Burgess Odell of Hickory, Va. His funeral was conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon, and the body was laid to rest in the family lot in Rosemont Cemetery.
