KELLO BURGES Mrs. Mattie Kello Burges died at the home of her brother, C.B. Kello, near Berlin, this county, February 27, in her 87th year. Mrs. Burges, a woman of many exceptionally fine qualities, was the widow of Dr. Richard Urquhart Burges, a prominent physician and citizen of Southampton County many years ago. She is survived by two brothers, Charles B. Kello of this county and Harry P. Kello of Crewe, Va.; by two step-daughters, Mrs. Guy O. Mason of Washington and Mrs. J.D. Barton of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a number of nieces and nephews, besides a host of friends. She was also the mother of the late James Urquhart Burges of Suffolk, a lawyer of that city who numbered many friends in our town and county. Mrs. Burges was truly a fine representative of the older citizens of our section, a woman clinging to the better traditions of old time, but keeping abreast with the new. Funeral rites were held from Millfield Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. George Kissinger, 3rd, pastor of Millfield, assisted by the Rev. Edward Laine. Pallbearers were: Henry Felts, James Felts, Garland Davis, E. Jerome Raiford, J.B. Stephenson, Edgar V. Stephenson, W.C. Rawls and Providence Warren. Burial was made in the family cemetery near Ivor. Services were largely attended by many friends from the county and from Suffolk, Norfolk and Richmond. Matilda B. (KELLO; Mrs. Richard U.)
