SMITH BURGESS Mrs. Mary Smith Burgess, a greatly beloved woman of our town and county, died Sunday night at Raiford Hospital after an illness of a year of more. Mrs. Burgess would have attained her 91st birthday on May 28, having spent an unusually long and useful life. Born in Dover, Kentucky, the daughter of Dr. Fletcher Smith and Mrs. Kate Bayless Smith, she was married to Daniel Morgan Burgess of Local Grove plantation, Fluvanna County, Virginia, in 1878, her husband being a gallant and honored Confederate veteran. Mr. Burgess served throughout the war, losing a leg in the battle of Kelly’s Ford, and participating in Pickett’s great charge at Gettysburg. Mr. and Mrs. Burgess made their home in Richmond for many years where Mr. Burgess was for more than 40 years connected with the Supreme Court Library. Moving to Sedley 20 years ago, Mr. Burgess died there in 1922. At Sedley, Mrs. Burgess was one of the moving spirits in the organization of Grace Memorial M.E. Church, Sedley, named in honor of her daughter, the late Grace Burgess Odell, and was quite active in the work of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union throughout the county. While a resident of Richmond she was President of the Unity W.C.T.U. of that city. Intensely loyal to the spirit of the Old South and deeply interested in the Daughters of the Confederacy, she was the originator of the plan for establishing the Home of Confederate Women of Richmond, which is now housed in the beautiful building on the grounds of Robert Edward Lee Camp No. 1, Confederate Veterans there. She was a member of Agnes Lee Chapter Daughter of the Confederacy here and maintained a lively and helpful interest in its affairs so long as her health permitted. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. R.L. Raiford, with whom and her son-in- law, Dr. R.L. Raiford, she made her home; by three grandsons, Dr. Morgan B. Raiford, Fletcher L. Raiford and Fred Burgess Odell; a son-in-law, Rev. E.K. Odell, of Mathews County, and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held at the grave in Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley, Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, the Rev. B.B. Bland, pastor of High Street M.E. Church, reading the service. Active pallbearers were: Dr. T. Addison Morgan, Dr. J.P. Broaddus, J.H. Boyd, J. Edgar Weede, W.M. Weede, H.A. Purnell, J.P. King and Rufus L. Johnson. Mary A. (SMITH; Mrs. Daniel M.)
