Charles W. Spivey, the Rev. R.H. Marks and the Rev. Jimmie Trimmer. Echols Funeral Home, Emporia, was in charge. Pallbearers were Charles B. Settle, P.A. Pope, Dr. David C. Williams, Monty Francis, Joe Claud, D.H. Bell, Lee Bain, Marvin Felton, Ira H. Barham. Burgess, 79, a Southampton County farmer, died Tuesday in a Franklin hospital. A native of Southampton County, he was a son of George Washington and Mrs. Virginia Cox Burgess. He was a member of Capron Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Curtis Brooks Jr. of Norfolk; two sons, Joe Burgess of Wakefield and Page Burgess of Norfolk; six sisters, Mrs. Hannah Pierce, Mrs. Jane Edwards and Mrs. Frances Little of Capron, Miss Bessie Burgess of Cheriton, Mrs. Minnie B. Marks of Suffolk, and Mrs. Hope Smith of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
