Holland and Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Harold Lewis. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Dundlow, Howard Hancock Sr., Edward Morton, Lloyd Rountree, J. Braxton Holcombe, Hector W. Baker, Edwin D. Priggen and Edward H. Blythe Sr. A native of Southampton County, he was the husband of Mrs. Maggie Cogsdale Burgess and a son of Jefferson D. and Mrs. Romine Joyner Burgess. He was a retired farmer and a member of Courtland Baptist Church and its Men's Bible Class. Besides his widow, surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James H. Lee Jr. and Miss Elsie Burgess, and a son, Claude C. Burgess, all of Courtland; a sister, Mrs. V.C. Lankford Sr., and a brothers, Clyde W. Burgess, both of Franklin; three grandsons; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
