BARKLEY Thadeus Micajah Barkley, aged seventy-one years, died Wednesday, March 26th, at the home of his son, E.M. Barkley, near Newsoms. His remains were laid to rest in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins, Thursday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. L.F. Paulette, of the Newsoms Baptist Church. Mr. Barkley had been in feeble health for some time, his death resulting more from the infirmities of old age than from illness or disease. He was a consistent member of the Baptist church and for the past two years had held his membership at Newsoms. The most of his earlier life was spent in this immediate neighborhood, where he was known as a man of honest convictions, upright conduct and strong Christian character. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Virginia Barkley, and eight sons, Joseph W. of Hingham, Mass.; Brown L. and Harvey K. of Portsmouth; Robert L. of Raleigh, N.C.; Edwin M. and Overby H. of Newsoms; Cullen M. of New Orleans, La.; and Benjamin C. of Portsmouth. The pallbearers were J.R. Bryant, R.W. Ferguson, W.D. Barnes, W.W. White, W. M. Cutchins, D.B. Rountree, B.F. Bryant and H.T. Miles. The grave was covered with beautiful floral designs. *original gave Thaddeus; extra D dropped throughout Thadeus Micajah "Thad" BARKLEY, Southampton Co. native, d. 26 Mar 1919, at son's home, near Newsoms, age 71, interred in Beechwood Cemetery (Annex 1, Section C, Plot 9/10*), Boykins, 27 Mar 1919, "The Tidewater News" (Franklin, VA), Apr. 4, 1919, p. 9 *Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project, Beechwood list: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/cemeteries/beechwd.txt Additional information: His widow's obit ("Tidewater News," Aug. 12, 1927, p. 8), with their marriage record appended, is posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/obits/b624v1ob.txt His parents' marriage records - James R.
