(Special to Virginian-Pilot.) [line printed upside-down] Courtland, Va, Sept 15. - Dr. E.C. Barrett, ex-Judge of the County Court for Southampton county, died at his home in this town to-day, in the 64th year of his age. He leaves one son, four daughters and a wide circle of friends to mourn his departure. He will be buried beside his deceased wife to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in Courtland. Dr. Eugene Calhoun BARRETT, physician, former Southampton Co. judge & Postmaster of Courtland, d. 16 Sep 1899, at home, Courtland, age circa 64, listed in the BLOW-BARRETT family cemetery*, off Hwy. 35, "The Virginian-Pilot" (Norfolk, VA), Vol. 3, No. 145, Sep. 16, 1899, p. 6, col. 3 Additional information: *His mother, Eveline L. (BLOW; Mrs. Davis) BARRETT, & her mother are the only two marked graves in this cemetery, documented by the WPA in 1937. (FamilySearch.org "Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940," database, citing Sussex, Virginia, reference P-9 L-17; FHL microfilm 34,185.) His family appears in Boykins Depot Twp. in 1870 Census {indexed "Burrell"} and in Jerusalem Dist. in 1880. They lost daughter Evelina 20 Aug 1878, age 14 mos. (Southampton Co. D.Recs., p. 80 {orig.p. 5 #1}), and apparently sons Robert H. (b. c1862) & Eugene C. (b. c1867) between 1870-1880. M. Lou BARRETT, b. Southampton Co., dt/o J.H. & Susan PARKER, d. 10 Mar 1890, Southampton Co., age 52. (recopied Southampton Co. D.Recs, p. 81 {orig.p. 1 #18}) He presided 16 Feb 1880, producing a commission from the governor and taking the prescribed oath. (Southampton Co. Court Order Book 1875-81, p. 451) He was appointed Postmaster of Courtland 27 Apr 1893. He was replaced by Mattie R. TYLER 16 Jul 1897.
