Brett, Hertford County, N.C., died Friday night at her home near Como after an illness of many months. Mrs. Brett was the daughter of the late James and Emma Jane Whitley Brett, of Hertford County. She was a member of New Hope Methodist Church. Surviving her are four daughters, Mrs. G.B. Whitley, Misses Hilda and Eunice Brett of Como, N.C., and Mrs. H.W. Gray of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; seven sisters, Mrs. Rosa Hill, of Portsmouth; Mrs. Annie Whitley, of Como; Mrs. Jimmy Story and Mrs. Della Bowles of Suffolk; Mrs. Vennie Williams of Gates County, N.C.; Mrs. Blanch Gray, of Franklin and Mrs. S.E. Whitehead [sic; J.C. Whitfield], of Sunbeam; six brothers, Walter Brett, J.G. Brett, of Como; Woodard Brett, of Portsmouth; Leo Brett, of Zuni; H.D. Brett, of Sedley, and Luther Brett of Sunbeam. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at New Hope Methodist Church by Rev. L.G. Tinnell. D.Cert. 19222 (Maney's Neck #5) Her husband left will 24 Mar 1938, proved 1 Mar 1939. (Hertford Co., NC, WB F:146-47) Her father (1834 - 1915) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. H, 41st VA Infantry. Her step-mother (1855 - 1930) applied for a pension 28 Jun 1924 in Southampton Co. Her father left will 23 Oct 1903, proved 16 Dec 1915. (Hertford Co., NC, WB D:373-75) Her father & step-mother are marked in the New Hope Church Site Historic Cemetery, near Como, Hertford Co., NC. Her father ("1833 - 1915") also has a Confederate gravestone in a field just outside Como, NC.
