Brett died suddenly at his home here, Monday, February 21, at 6:30 o'clock aged 74. He had been failing for sometime, but no one expected the end so soon. For his friends and neighbors he gave of his means, his talent and his life. He was widely known; was a man of open heart and generous nature, honest and upright in every way; a true and loyal friend and neighbor; a kind and affectionate husband and father. His death is a great loss, not only to the family and community, but to the entire circle of his acquaintance by whom he was loved as a personal friend. He served as surgeon through the Civil War and knew of its hardships and sufferings. He was a member of Buckhorn Baptist church and the funeral was conducted from the home Thursday, a.m., February 24, by his pastor, Rev. Mr. Dailey, assisted by Rev. A.L. Carson of the Methodist church. The interment was in the family burying ground. He leaves a wife who was Miss Elma Bryant; three sons and one daughter, R.T. Brett of Akron, Ohio, Jarvis, Gordon and Miss Elma Brett who reside at home. Dr. Henry Thomas BRETT, Jr., farmer, Civil War surgeon*, NC native, d. 21 Feb 1916, at home, age 74, interred in the family cemetery*, 24 Feb 1916, "The Tidewater News" (Franklin, VA), Mar. 3, 1916 *Additional information: Burial site not known (Oct 2017) to the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project. No Virginia D.Cert. found. He appears in the 1900 & 1910 Census in Maneys's Neck Dist., Hertford Co., NC, and his widow appears there in 1920 & '30. He resided in Southampton Co. 27 Oct 1887, when he m. Cornelia Elma BRYANT. (Southampton Co. MB6:21) He appears as a Farmer in each of those records. He appears as a private, a Hospital steward on the roster of the 4th N.C. Cav. [59th N.C. Troops]. (Ancestry.com "U.S. Cil War Soldiers") His in-laws, Richard Lewis/Louis & Martha Lucretia "Lou" (HILL) BRYANT are buried in a BRYANT family cemetery, off Monroe Rd., near Statesville.
