Brett was conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Purviance Funeral Chapel, Wakefield, by the Rev. R.E. Abbott and the Rev. Grover C. Holder. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin. Pallbearers were Cadmus Stephenson, Alvan Munford*, Robert Lowe, Alvin Brock, Lonnie Umphlette, William Billups, Navie Britt and Roger Britt. Brett, 78, died in a Franklin hospital Monday. A native of Hertford County, N.C., he lived most of his life and farmed in Southampton County. He was a son of James and Mrs. Mary Johnson Brett. He was a member of New Hope Methodist Church, Como, N.C. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Whitley Brett; four sons, Herbert L. Brett of Carrsville, Lloyd Brett of Walters, James Brett of Wilson, N.C., and Archie Q. Brett of Zuni; three daughters, Mrs. Josie B. Butler of Zuni, Mrs. Gracie B. Gray of Newsoms, and Mrs. Alice B. Britt of Ivor; two sisters, Mrs. Vennie Williams of Gates, N.C. and Mrs. Blanche Miles of Sunbeam; a brother J.G. Brett of Como; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. His step-mother (1855 - 1930) applied for a pension 28 Jun 1924 in Southampton Co. His father left will 23 Oct 1903, proved 16 Dec 1915.
