Barrett of Franklin, died suddenly at her home in South High Street Tuesday night, May 15, at 11:30 o’clock. Mrs. Barrett was in apparent good health and had attended a performance at the Franklin Theatre that evening with some of her children, and died almost immediately a short time after returning to her home. Mrs. Barrett was in her seventy-first year and was Miss Mary Estelle Powell, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel B. Powell of Murfreesboro, N.C., being born in that town January 24, 1853. On February 28, 1871, she became the bride of R.C. Barrett of Franklin, the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Barrett being an interesting and largely attended event in our town, February 28, 1921. The deceased is survived by nine children: Miss Claudia M. Barrett, Mrs. F.E. Howell, Mrs. Spurgeon Rawls, L.M. Barrett and R.S. Barrett of Franklin, R.C. Barrett, Jr., Mrs. V.A. Brinkley, Mrs. L. C. Holland and Mrs. L.P. Hill of Suffolk; by a number of grandchildren; by three sisters, Mrs. R.M. Butler, Mrs. Annis Beaman and Miss Fanny Norfleet of Suffolk, and by a wide circle of relatives and friends. She was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church where she had held her membership for many years. Her life was spent in service to her family, her greatest concern at all times being the welfare, comfort and pleasure of the members of the home circle. That she had successfully attained to the highest ambition of the true mother was evident to all who were privileged to enjoy an insight into the home where unselfish devotion had its reward in the happiness of father, mother and children. The funeral services were conducted from the Franklin Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Dr. C.H. Rowland of the Christian Church, in the absence of the Pastor. There were many beautiful floral tributes and by the expressed wish of Mrs. Barrett some time prior to her death her son, R.S. Barrett, sang "The Christian’s Good Night". Interment was made in the family plot at Poplar Spring cemetery, the pallbearers being: active, D.A. Holland, I.E. Howell, G.G. Smith, J.A. Johnson, Dr. J.M. Powell, R.I. Beale, Geo. I. Earnest, J.A.
