All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ROBERT ERNEST BARRETT Robert Ernest Barrett, 47 years of age, died suddenly at his home in Franklin Wednesday morning. He was the son of Mrs. Nannie L. Barrett and of the late Lucillus Barrett of Newsoms, this county, attending the Franklin Military Academy as a young man and following his education at his school going with Knight Drug Company, later the Parker Drug Company, where he had been employed for 16 years. During the past four years he had been with the Virginian. Mr. Barrett and Miss Lillian Trice of St. Michael’s, Md., were married ten years ago, and besides his wife he is survived by their [children], Edith May, Ernestine and Robert Ernest Barrett, Jr.; by his mother, Mrs. Nannie L. Barrett; three brothers, Harry G. and Leroy Barrett of Newsoms and Lycurgus Barrett of Suffolk and three sisters, Mrs. T.E. Barrett of Norfolk, Mrs. J.A. Brown of Suffolk and Miss Margaret Barrett, who teaches in the Ivor High School, besides a large family connection in this county and a wide circle of friends. He was a member of High Street M.E. Church, Franklin, and of the Men’s Bible Class of that church. A gentleman in his conduct and dealings with his fellows; true in all of the manifold obligations of life; always courteous and accommodating in his business relations, he numbered many friends throughout the town and county and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held from his late residence in Barrett Avenue, Franklin, yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, conducted by his Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Geo. H. Spooner assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church, Rev. R. Harrison Marks of the Newsoms M.E. Church and Rev. J.A. Chapman of Norfolk, a former pastor of Mr. Barrett’s at High Street M.E. Church. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the body bearers being: Geo. H. Parker, H.M Campbell, H.A. Barrett, L.D. Story, L.P. Simmons, J.H. Boyd, G.G. Smith and C.V. McGehee. The honorary bearers were: C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, Claude J. Edwards, J.D. Fowler, Wesley H. Beale, Walter H. Norfleet, R.A. Pretlow, B.T. Watkins, Dr. W.E. Snipes, Dr. W.H. Arthur, Franklin Edwards, J. Ryland Dunn, B.D. Barrett, J.V. Simmons, Dr. E.A. deBordenave, E.M. Bryant, C.A. Worrell, Edgar B. Jackson, Dr. J.B. Powell, J. Edgar Weede, G.A. Gardner, J.J. Pace, Jesse A. Weede, R.I. Beale, J.F. Sandin, J.R. Beaton, H.G. Cobb, C.E. Pond, J.P. King, S.W. Rawls, George Watkins, L.L. Beaton, B.A. Brooks, Harry Steinhardt, J.B. Gay and J.O. Haslett.
