All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WALTER LEWIS BRETT Franklin, Va., April 9 - Walter Lewis Brett, 86, prominent farmer of Como, N.C. community died Friday morning at his home after an illness of many months. He was a native of Southampton County, moving to North Carolina when a young man. He was the son of James Elbert and Emma Whitley Brett and the husband of Mary Eliza Brett of Como, who survives him. He was the oldest member of New Hope Methodist Church where he served for many years on the board of stewards. Besides his wife he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. E.C. Williams, Windsor; Mrs. W.T. Liverman and Mrs. J.T. Brett, Murfreesboro; Miss Helen Brett, of Como and Mrs. R.D. Edwards, Franklin; seven sons, Lewis Elbert and Dennis Littleton Brett, both of Franklin, Ernest Lee Brett, of Como; Emmette Carson Brett, of Washington; Walter Ashby Brett, of Murfreesboro; Julian Joseph Brett, of Como, and Calvin Smith Brett, of Portsmouth; one sister, Mrs. Rosa Hill of Norfolk; three half brothers, Leo Brett of Zuni; Jim Guy Brett, of Como, and Hubert D. Brett, of Holland; four half sisters, Mrs. Eva Whitfield, of Gates; Mrs. Mary Story of Norfolk, and Blanch Gray, of Norfolk; 19 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The body was taken to the funeral home of W.J.M. Holland and Sons of Franklin and on Saturday will be taken to the home near Como, N.C. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at New Hope Methodist Church at 3 o'clock by the Rev. O.L. Gochenour. Burial will be family cemetery near Como. H, 41st VA Infantry. His step-mother (1855 - 1930) applied for a pension 28 Jun 1924 in Southampton Co. His father left will 23 Oct 1903, proved 16 Dec 1915. (Hertford Co., NC, WB D:373-75) His father & step-mother are marked in the New Hope Church Site Historic Cemetery, near Como, Hertford Co., NC. His father ("1833 - 1915") also has a Confederate gravestone in a field just outside Como, NC.
