Bradshaw, third child of Goodwin and Elizabeth Bradshaw, was born on a farm in the Corinth neighborhood October 15, 1845. He spent his childhood and young manhood during those times of stress and poverty incident to the Civil War and the Reconstruction period following it. When Friends traveling in the ministry used to speak their messages of love and the compelling power of truth in saving man and directing their lives, they called the community together at the home of Joel Bradshaw’s parents, and this home in time became the nucleus of Corinth Meeting. He was a Birthright Friend and in young manhood became a dependable member of the church. He was an overseer in Black Creek Meeting for more than 35 years. During his active life he was a regular attendant at both Sabbath and mid-week meetings for worship, saying that no one need ask if he would attend meeting, for everyone might know that he would always be there if he was well enough to do so. On January 19, 1888, he was united in marriage to Martha Beaton and they established their home on the farm where he spent the remainder of his life and left it as a goodly heritage to those who follow after. Joel Bradshaw was firm in his convictions of loyalty to the principles of Friends and their testimonies concerning thrift, simplicity and economy. He thought it wrong to engage in extravagance or unnecessary expenditure of money upon ourselves, when it was needed so badly for the work of the Lord and for aiding those who are in want. He passed away January 31, 1923, age 77 years, three months, 15 days, leaving a widow, a son and a daughter and their families to mourn his passing. His was a useful life, well rounded in its fullness, and his passing is as a shock of wheat fully ripe gathered into the Heavenly Father’s storehouse. Joel D.
