He was the widower of Florence Gentry Harton Brittle, also of Richmond. His parents were Mattie S. Pulley of Raleigh, N.C. and Fred G. Brittle Sr. of Ivor, Va. Mr. Brittle had retired in 1970 in Atlanta, Ga., after a 30 year career in accounting. With the US Army Corps of Engineers during World War II from June 22, 1943 to January 27, 1946, he achieved the rank of First Sergeant during campaign in Normandy, Northern France, and in the Pacific Theater. In 1956, he was valedictorian of his class and a recipient of an excellence in scholarship award from the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity when he graduated from Atlanta Law School with the Bachelor of Laws Degree. He passed the Georgia bar examination that same year, one of 83 successful candidates out of the 351 who took the required examination. In Richmond during his retirement, he was an active member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church and a member of Strick Observance Masonic Lodge #207 AF&AM and the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies. His funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, at the Parham Chapel of the Woody Funeral Home in Richmond. Interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 5, at the Parham Chapel. Donations in Mr. Brittle’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
