All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ BETTIE LANGHORNE BARHAM Funeral services for Mrs. Bettie Langhorne Barham, for fifty years one of this county’s finest citizens, were held in the cemetery at her former home, Newsoms, Wednesday afternoon at 5 o’clock following rites conducted from Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Suffolk at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Louis A. Haskell officiating. Mrs. Barham was a member of the long prominent Langhorne family of Virginia, and was born in Smithfield, Va., October 4, 1850, the daughter of the Rev. Maurice Langhorne and Mrs. Louisa Drew Langhorne. In 1875 she married Joseph L. Barham of Newsoms, and for fifty years they made their home in that village until after the death of Mr. Barham December 20, 1925. Mr. Barham, a gallant Confederate soldier and a member of the famous V.M.I. Boys Brigade at New Market in the Civil War, was one of Southampton’s leading citizens, a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1901 from this county, Sheriff of this county, President of the Meherrin Valley Bank of Boykins and serving his county and district as Supervisor for several years. For the past 16 years. Mrs. Barham and her daughter, Miss Lulie Drew Barham, had made their home at the Hotel Elliott in Suffolk, and age had failed to dim her interest in world affairs until just a few days before her death. She was a woman of remarkable ability, well-informed, active and friendly toward the large number of people who enjoyed and valued her friendship. She was a consistent communicant of the Episcopal Church. Surviving her is her daughter, Miss Lulie Drew Barham of Suffolk, her only son, Judge J. Langhorne Barham dying a number of years ago, while several years ago her only grandson, Charles D. Barham, died as a result of an automobile accident. She leaves two granddaughters, Mrs. Donald Bell of Goldsboro, N.C., and Mrs. D. Stover Berry of Louisville, Ky.; seven great- grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews, among whom are: Rev. Edgar G. Gammon, D.D., president of Hampden-Sydney College; Col. J. Polk, Gammon, U.S.A., now stationed in Atlanta; Mrs. Ashton McWharter of Knoxville, Tenn.; Dr. Curtis Langhorne of Atlanta; Mrs. Howard Gwaltney of Smithfield, and Miss Lulie Gaines of Asheville, N.C. ****************************************************************************** Mrs. B.L. Barham Buried April [sic; May] 12th Suffolk, May 13 - Funeral services for Mrs. Bettie Langhorne Barham, prominent resident of this city, and widely known in the State, who died Tuesday morning at 12:10 o'clock at the age of 92, were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev.
