King, in Franklin after an illness of only three days. Mr. Barham, who was the son of the late R. Franklin Barham and Mrs. Rebecca Judkins Barham of Capron, both of well-known Southampton families, was born at the old homestead in the Capron community 73 years ago, and had spent his life there until he came to Franklin eight years ago to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. King. He was a man well-known and greatly esteemed for his fine character and an unusually high sense of honor and integrity. Joining Applewhite’s M.E. Church in his home community as a boy, he became a charter member of Capron M.E. Church upon its organization and was a steward of that congregation for many years, moving his membership to High Street M.E. Church, Franklin, when he came here. He was a successful farmer and served as a rural carrier at Capron from the establishment of the first rural route out of that village until he reached the retirement age in 1928. In June, 1891, he married Miss Ida Dameron of Brunswick County, who died May 22, 1923, and their three children survive them; Mrs. J.P. King of Franklin, W.J. Barham of Wilmington, Delaware, and Percy D. Barham of Ivor; four grandchildren, Joe King, Jr., and Katherine King of Franklin, Jane Barham and W.J. Barham, Jr. of Brodnax, Va., and two sisters, Mrs. Carlton Vaughan of Washington and Mrs. G.L. Dameron of Albert, Va. During the eight years he had made his home in Franklin he had won many friends here who admired him for his quiet, unassuming ways and his sterling principles of life. Funeral rites were held from the residence in North High Street Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock, conducted by his Pastor, the Rev. Henry W. Davis of High Street M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. Roscoe Jones, a former pastor, by the Rev. J. Sutherland-Watt of Norfolk, Dr. Elwood W. Jones of the Franklin Christian Church and the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Baptist Church. Two of his favorite hymns were used during the service, "In the Garden," and "The Old Rugged Cross," and the pallbearers were: Dashland D. Barham of Capron, William B. Simmons of Sebrell, Edwin D. Priggen of Portsmouth, Dr. R.L. Raiford, R.J. Howell, Hugh L. Westbrook, Winston H. Browne and Paul Scarborough. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery where a profusion of lovely flowers covered the grave.
