While it was known that he had not been in his usual robust health for the past several years, his death came as a shock to his family and friends. J.T. Barham was a native of Southampton County, born June 22, 1864, near Capron, the son of the late Lucy Jane Harding and Henry Thomas Barham. He was married to 1888 to Miss Eula Daniel, daughter of the late C.C. Daniel of Pleasant Hill, N.C. It was a congenial, happy union; together they wrought through the years, and the result was a successful home, given to hospitality. One’s first thought in making an estimate of J.T. Barham might be: "This is the passing of a successful business man." True, it is in the business world that he is best known, for he was most attentive to his business. He was at the post of duty early and late, and he lived to see the success of his labors, having become a leading merchant and one of the largest land owners in Southampton County. Not only will Joe Tom Barham be missed in the business world but, especially as one of our town’s most useful citizens. He served Capron in many capacities; a director of the Bank of Capron since it's organization, president of the bank since 1918; a member of the Town Council; member of the Board of Stewards of Capron Methodist Church, and teacher of the Men’s Bible Class for many years. He assumed from time to time great responsibilities in his church and community; but so unobtrusively, so unostentatiously, that only as others undertake to carry on will the real work and worth of the man be realized. There is something more than habit that finds a man each Sunday in his place of worship at church. Few indeed were the times Joe Tom Barham was absent from any church service. He was a most liberal contributor to his church and to all objects of benevolence. A community feels the loss of such a man, who simply, modestly, surely, stands for moral values, for assured verities, for principles that cannot change. Besides his wife he is survived by one son, D.D. Barham, who was associated in business with his father; two daughters, Misses Nell and Clara Barham; four grandchildren, all of Capron. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. J.B. Matthews, of Norfolk. Funeral services were conducted from his home by his Pastor, Rev. R.H. Marks, assisted by Rev. W.E. Grand, a former pastor. Interment was made in the family cemetery near-by, the pallbearers being: D.D. Barham, S.B. East, Dr. Jas. A. Grizzard, Chas. W. Davis, H.L. Westbrook, H.L. Bain, S.N. Richardson and J. Elwood Fox.
