All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ALICE WIGGINS BRANCH Mrs. Alice Wiggins Branch, 95, member of a prominent Southampton County family, died in a Norfolk hospital on Friday afternoon, May 31, at 3:10 o’clock. She was the widow of James Samuel Branch and a daughter of the late John B. and Mrs. Sarah Parker Wiggins of Southampton County. (The old Wiggins homestead is located just off Route 258, about six miles south of Franklin.) A charter member of Sycamore Baptist Church, Mrs. Branch had been a resident of Norfolk for the past 40 years. Prior to her marriage she had taught school in Franklin and in the Forks of the River. Mrs. Branch is survived by four sons, John Richard Branch of Richmond and Samuel Crawford Branch, Linwood Oliver Branch and James Selwyn Branch, all of Norfolk; three sisters, Mrs. Mollie Norfleet of Portsmouth, and Mrs. Effie Lankford and Mrs. J.F. Kitterman, both of Norfolk; a brother, Jasper L. Wiggins of Edenton, N.C.; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Branch were conducted at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Norfolk, on Monday morning at 11 o’clock by Rev. Harold A. Malmborg, pastor of Freemason Street Baptist Church. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Albert G. Beaman, J. Branch Beaman, Walter C. Beaman, Dr. J.S. Kitterman, Jasper L. Norfleet, John W. Wheeler and R. Bryan Wheeler. ******************************************************************************** MRS. ALICE W. BRANCH On May 31, 1957, Mrs. Alice Wiggins Branch passed away in a Norfolk hospital. She was born February 2, 1862, at the old Jesse Parker manor house in Southampton County, near Franklin, the daughter of John Bowers and Mary S. Parker Wiggins. Graduating from the Misses Finney’s Finishing School in Suffolk in 1883, she taught for two years in the public school in Franklin under Mrs. Mollie Bryant. Later she taught in the Bethany public school until 1893. At the time of her death Mrs. Branch was the oldest living ex-public school teacher in the state of Virginia and the only living charter member of Sycamore Baptist Church. In 1893 she married James S. Branch of Enfield, N.C., who passed away in 1915. [Alice (WIGGINS; Mrs. James S.)
