CARROLL WILLIAM "PETER" BARNES 

   Carroll William (Peter) Barnes, 72, of Courtland, died Monday evening in 
a local hospital.  He was a native of Southampton County.  He was the husband 
of Mrs. Lucy Laine Barnes.  He was retired supervisor from the Virginia 
Department of Highways.  Besides his wife; he is survived by one daughter, 
Mrs. Ellen B. Rose of Burlington, N.C.; one son, Gordon Barnes of Courtland; 
two sisters, Mrs. Grace Vaughan and Mrs. E.F. Babb, both of Courtland; one 
brother, Robert Barnes of Sebrell; three grandchildren.  A funeral service 
will be held Wednesday, 3 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home, 
Franklin.  Burial will be in Vincent Grove Church Cemetery.

  COURTLAND - Funeral service for Carroll William "Peter" Barnes, 72, 
of Rt. 1, Courtland, was held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland and 
Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Murphy and the Rev. C.B. King.

  Burial was in Vincent Grove Church Cemetery.

  A native of Southampton County, he was a retired supervisor for the 
Virginia Department of Highways and a Methodist.

  Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lucy Laine Barnes; a daughter, Mrs. 
Ellen B. Rose of Burlington, N.C.; and a son, O. Gordon Barnes of Courtland.
