Barnes, 820 Marshall Avenue, had the distinction of serving through the entire period of the War Between the States without receiving a scratch. Funeral services were held from the Mount Hope* Church, Southampton County on Monday. Mr. Barnes was the last survivor of three brothers who served gallantly and survived hostilities of the Civil War. The other brothers were Sam and William H. Barnes, of Suffolk. All were members of the Thirty-first North Carolina Regiment, Clingman's Brigade, Hoke's division, Johnson's army.
