Barnes, aged 70, died suddenly at the home of his son, W. Wilson Barnes, at Boykins early last Friday morning. He was born in Southampton County in 1873. He is survived by three sons, Pfc. James Carroll Barnes, of the U.S. Army, now stationed at Nashville, Tenn.; Ralph K. Barnes of Newport News; W. Wilson Barnes of Boykins; one daughter, Mrs. James Edward Gardner of Suffolk; one brother, G. Dallas Barnes of Severn, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. I.J. Jones of Carrsville, Mrs. B.G. Ferguson of Suffolk, Mrs. Cora Beale of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, a large family connection and a host of friends. He was an active Mason and Woodman of the World, a consistent and loyal member of the Boykins Baptist Church and a deacon of his church, and for many years teacher of the adult Bible class. He was mail messenger at the Boykins post office. Funeral services were conducted at the Boykins Baptist Church Sunday afternoon by Rev. Frank B. Handley of Crewe, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. V.T. Carroll, pastor of Windsor Baptist Church. The crowded church and lovely flowers showed the love of his many friends. J.D. Hoggard of Ahoskie, N.C., Leon Spencer of Seaboard, N.C., N.T. Gardner of Suffolk, J.C. Blowe, J. Dayton Edwards and R.S. Edwards of Boykins, were pallbearers. Members of the adult Bible class were honorary pallbearers. Interment was in Beechwood Cemetery, a Masonic burial being conducted by the members of the Courtland Lodge, with which he was affiliated.
