LAURA POPE BARNES

   Mrs. Laura Pope Barnes, 77, widow of Nathaniel Thomas Barnes and daughter 
of the late Lemuel and Jane Roberts Pope of Southampton County, died January 
29, 1944, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.H. Joyner, of Capron, after a 
long illness.

   Besides he daughter, she is survived by two stepsons, S.M. Barnes and 
Robert Barnes of Newsoms; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and 
one brother, J.W. Pope, of Baltimore.

   Funeral services were conducted at the home of her daughter at 3 o’clock 
Monday by her pastor, Rev. L.D. Stables of Capron.  The choirs of Capron and 
Whiteheads Methodist Churches sang, "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" and "Safe in 
the Arms of Jesus."

   The pall was of white carnations and red roses and pink sweetpeas.  Active 
pallbearers were: Raleigh Drake, Carroll Barnes, Vernie Smith, Joseph Pope, 
Thomas Warren and Maynard Griffin.

   Flower bearers were friends of the family.  Burial was made in Capron 
Cemetery.
