Barnes, died at his home in Emporia Thursday afternoon of last week after several months of ill health. Mr. Barnes was a native and former resident of Southampton County. Surviving besides his mother are his wife, Mrs. Lelia Kelly Barnes; two sons R.M. Barnes, Jr. U.S.N., and Edward Barnes of Emporia; four daughters, Misses Marie Barnes of Mary Washington College, Elizabeth, Kitty and Nancy Ruth, of Emporia; three sisters, Mrs. G.D. Overman of Franklin, Mrs. E.F. Babb and Mrs. Thomas Vaughan of Courtland; three brothers, W.B. Barnes of Dolphin, Carrol W. and Robbie Barnes of Courtland, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the home by his pastor, the Rev. Mr. Boyd, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Dugger, with burial in Pelham M. E. Church Cemetery, Greensville County.
