GEO. W. BARNES On Monday, December 27, 1920, at 5:30 p.m., at the home of her son, J.B. Barnes, on West High street, Mrs. Sarah Williams Barnes breathed her last and passed labor to reward. Mrs. Barnes, who was a daughter of Nathan Williams, who has long since passed away, was born in Hertford county, N.C. on June 12, 1844, and was endowed with those traits which we are proud to refer to as typical of our true Southern women, standing for those things which are true, pure and noble. On January 19, 1871, she was married to Mr. Geo. W. Barnes, who still survives her, and her devotion to her husband and family through the years is indeed worthy of mention - "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." Mr. and Mrs. Barnes lived in Hertford county, N.C. until one year ago when they moved with their son to Franklin, and she had never transferred her church membership from Newsoms Baptist Church where she had been a member for many years. Her religion she lived, and she died with a smile. She is survived by her husband, Mrs. Geo. W. Barnes, of Franklin, and six children; J.H. Barnes of Boykins, G.D. Barnes of Severn, N.C., J.B. Barnes of Franklin, Mrs. B.G. Ferguson of Suffolk, Mrs. I.J. Jones of Franklin, and Mrs. W.L. Beale of Portsmouth. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery Tuesday afternoon with funeral services at the grave by Rev. M.A. MacLean of the Baptist church, assisted by Dr. C.H. Rowland of the Christian church, where a large concourse of relatives and friends had gathered to pay their last sad tribute of respect. The pallbearers were J.O.H. Daughtrey, W.H. Lankford, J.M. Eley, J.B. Gay, A.M. Williams, W.J. McKinsty, Uriah Rawls, I.J. Jones. Sarah Ivalona (WILLIAMS; Mrs. George W.)
