BARNES NEWSOMS -- Solomon Moody Barnes, 84, died Saturday in a Newport News hospital. A native of Southampton County, he was the husband of Mrs. Martha Drake Barnes and a son of Nathaniel Thomas and Mrs. Clara Ellis Barnes. He was a retired farmer and member of Newsoms United Methodist Church. Besides his widow, surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Raleigh L. Drake of Boykins, Mrs. Donald S. Jenkins of Conway, N.C., and Mrs. Robert L. Clark Jr. of Richmond; four sons, Benjamin Thomas Barnes of Courtland, Samuel M. Barnes Sr. of Holland, Walter I. Barnes of Portsmouth, and James E. Barnes of Franklin; a sister, Mrs. Lucy Joyner of Franklin; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held today at 3 p.m. in Newsoms United Methodist Church by the Rev. Harry Bunch. Burial was in Newsoms Cemetery with McDowell Funeral Home, Boykins, in charge. ****************************************************************************** SOLOMON MOODY BARNES NEWSOMS - A funeral service for Solomon Moody Barnes, 84, of Newsoms, was held Monday at 3 p.m. in Newsoms United Methodist Church by the Rev. Harry Bunch. Burial was in Newsoms Cemetery with McDowell Funeral Home, Boykins, in charge. Pallbearers were Robert L. Drake, Carroll Drake, Howard D. Barnes, Robert W. Barnes and Tommy Barnes, all grandsons; James H. Porter; Marshall Vick and Marvin Cook.
