Mr. Barnes was born in this county, October 20, 1856. He was a faithful member of the Newsoms Baptist Church. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Rosa Kitchen Barnes; four daughters, Mrs. H.L. Duke and Miss Mary Ethel Barnes of Newsoms; Mrs. E.M. Barkley and Mrs. R.G. Carter of Boykins; two sons, Southgate L. Barnes, U.S.A., and David Barnes of Newsoms; three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Sue Crutchlow of Petersburg. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in Newsoms Cemetery Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock with Rev. L.E. Dailey officiating, assisted by Rev. Frank B. Handley of Boykins. "Saved By Grace" was sung by the choir of the Newsoms Baptist Church. The active pallbearers were: R.N. Darden, J.T. Story, P.S. Worrell, D.B. Rountree, J.T. Worrell and J.W. Holland of Boykins. Floral offerings were omitted by request.
