All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ANTOINETTE MARY BRYANT The death of Miss Antoinette Mary Bryant occurred Monday evening about nine o'clock at the residence in North High Street after an illness of nearly a year's duration. Miss Bryant was born at "Bloomfield" plantation, on the Courtland-Sedley road, June 22, 1866. She was the daughter of the late James Deberry Bryant and Mrs. Mary Louise (Nutt) Bryant, and had for more than fifty years been a resident of Franklin. After her mother's death in 1913 she had made her home with her sister, Mrs. J.A. Jackson, in High Street. Uniting with the Franklin Methodist Church at the age of 13 years, she was in point of service one of the oldest members of the local congregation. A member of a prominent Southampton family, Miss Bryant was the half-sister of the late Dr. James Fenton Bryant, N. Bynum Bryant, and Mrs. Rosa Bryant Gay, and the sister of Mrs. Flora B. Jackson and the late Robert Murray Bryant. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Jackson, and a number of nieces and nephews, including J.F. Bryant, Jr., Mrs. J.J. Jones, Joe Bynum Gay, Sr., Miss Annie E. Gay, Mrs. B.L. Holt, L. Ashby Gay, all of Franklin, and J.A. Jackson, Jr. of Grantsville, West Virginia, Mrs. B.M. Trotter and Edgar Jackson of Norfolk. Funeral services were conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, the officiating clergyman being Rev. A. McK. Reynolds of High Street M.E. Church, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. Roscoe Jones of Portsmouth, and Revs. R.D. Stephenson and Elwood Jones of Franklin. Interment was in the Bryant plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers included W.T. Pace, Sr., George H. Parker, J.F. Bryant, Jr., Joe Bynum Gay, Sr., L. Ashby Gay, Jesse A. Weede, J. Edgar Weede, Harry Steinhardt, C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, J.C. Parker, Jr., Dr. A.P. Cutchin, J.W.B. Thompson, J.J. Jones and Dr. R.L. Raiford. The active pallbearers were B.L. Holt, W.M. Weede, and Joe Bynum Gay, Jr. of Franklin, G. Raney Bryant of Richmond, Jesse A. Jackson, Jr., of Grantsville, West. Va., B.M. Trotter, Jesse Jackson Trotter and Edgar Jackson of Norfolk.
