"Shorty," as he was known by all his friends, was loved by all who knew him. He was a man of fine character, a devoted husband and father and a faithful friend. Possessing such a sunny disposition he was ever cheerful, pleasant and accommodating to everyone. He was the son of James D. and Mrs. Hattie Kitchen Bryant of Newsoms where he made his home until moving to Franklin. He was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church. Mr. Bryant was store room clerk at Chesapeake Camp Corp., and returned from his work Friday night apparently in his usual good health. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Fowler Bryant and one daughter, Miss Mabel Bryant, his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Jack Bunn of Newsoms and Mrs. Herman Bradshaw of Portsmouth; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at his home at 2:30 by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson and the Rev. R.C. Wells of Newsoms. Mr. Stephenson closed the services with "Crossing The Bar." The casket was covered with a pall of white carnations and red roses. The floral offerings were numerous. Joel Cooke Holland of Murfreesboro sang "Sunrise." A quartet composed of Mrs. F.F. Jenkins, Mrs. J.C. Taylor, E.K. Brinkley and Charlie Morgan sang "The Old Rugged Cross." Active pallbearers were Clyde Eley, Richard Balfour, David Lankford, Romie Holland, Linwood Worrell, Howard Ferguson of Windsor, John Norfleet and G.C. Duck. Friends of the family served as honorary pallbearers. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
