George Leroy Bryant, Sr., 74, native of Courtland and lifelong resident of Southampton County, died Friday, June 28, 1985 in Norfolk General Hospital. He was the son of the late George Linwood Bryant and Elsie Rowe Bryant of Courtland. Mr. Bryant was a former member of the Courtland Town Council. He was a member and former trustee of the Courtland United Methodist Church, charter member and past president of the Courtland Ruritan Club, and a member of the Manry Hunt Club. He served as magistrate of Southampton County for several years. Mr. Bryant was a former employee of Planters Peanut and Hancock Companies. Surviving is his wife, Edna Bradshaw Bryant; a daughter Martha Rowe B. Croft of South Hill, Va.; three sons, George Leroy Bryant, Jr. of Portland, Ore., Thomas (Tommy) E. Bryant of Courtland, and Jerry R. Bryant of Franklin; three sisters, Mrs. Eugenia B. Meharg of Richmond, Mrs. Eleanor B. Faircloth of Ivor, Va., and Mrs. Alice Lee B. Vick of Newsoms; nine grandchildren. Graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, Va., by the Rev. Luther Marks and Dr. Richard T. Diekmann. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Courtland Volunteer Rescue Squad, Courtland. The family will be at the residence on Rochelle Street, Courtland. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, in handling the arrangements.
