NEWSOMS - A funeral service for Johnnie Sterling Bryant, Jr., 68 of Newsoms was held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church by the Rev. Harry Bunch. Burial was in Newsoms Cemetery, with W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home, Franklin in charge. Pallbearers were Fred Worrell, Ben Bryant, John Bryant Jr., J.L. Porter, Jr., Walter Johnson, Preston Ferguson and Kirby Bryant. Bryant died Friday night in Southampton Memorial Hospital after a short illness. A native of Southampton County, he was a son of Johnnie S. Bryant Sr. and Mrs. Sallie Edwards Bryant and the husband of Mrs. Kathleen Lassiter Bryant. He was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and was a retired farmer. Besides his wife, surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Elsie B. Harrell of Suffolk and Mrs. Virginia Beale of Boykins; four brothers, Willie R. Bryant of Portsmouth and Leslie P. Bryant, Raymond D. Bryant and James T. Bryant all of Newsoms; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Martha Lakes, Connersville, Ind., Mrs. Sylvia Edwards, Franklin, Miss Veronica Lassiter, Newsoms; and four stepsons, Charles E. Lassiter, Newsoms, Billy S. Lassiter, Franklin, Bobby L. Lassiter, Connersville, Ind. and Edwin J. Lassiter, Newsoms.
