A native of Nansemond Co., lived here 37 years. He was the son of the late J.W. Bryant and Mrs. Roxie Miller Bryant and the husband of Mrs. Dorothy Brantley Bryant. Bryant had been agriculture instructor at Southampton High School, Courtland, and formerly taught at Franklin, Wakefield, Ivor and Windsor. He was a member of the Board of Stewards Ivor Methodist Church and teacher of the Young People’ Class and Superintendent of the church school. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jerry A. Enfield of Richmond, a sister, Mrs. G.M. Pierce of Portsmouth; two half-sisters, Mrs. Morris C. Jakeman of Suffolk and Mrs. Mayo B. Jones of Smithfield; a half-brother Louis V. Gerbie of Portsmouth; and two grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield. Burial will be in Ivor Cemetery with the Rev. Edward B. Owen officiating. ****************************************************************************** John Bryant Dies Saturday IVOR - John S. (Jack) Bryant, 60, died at his home in Ivor early Saturday morning after suffering a heart attack. He was a native of Nansemond County, son of John W. and Roxie Miller Bryant. He lived in Ivor for 37 years. At the time of his death, he was the agricultural instructor at Southampton High School. He had also held teaching positions in Courtland, Ivor, Wakefield, Windsor and Franklin High Schools. He was a member of Ivor Methodist Church, superintendent of the Sunday school, teacher of the young people’s class and a member of the board of stewards. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Brantley Bryant, one daughter, Mrs. Jerry A. Enfield of Richmond; a sister, Mrs. G. M. Pierce of Portsmouth; two half sisters, Mrs. Morris C. Jakeman of Suffolk and Mrs. Mayo B. Jones of Smithfield; a half brother, Louis V. Gerbie of Portsmouth, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the Purviance Funeral Home chapel in Wakefield by the Rev. Edward B. Owens. (1957-6573 {Williamsburg #60} gives son of John C. BRYANT. His mother 2m. a MASON, & 3m. Confederate veteran George Willis EDWARDS, 16 Jan 1906, in Isle of Wight Co.; they are buried in Newman Memorial Cemetery, Oakland Christian Church, Chuckatuck.
