BRYANT, JR., DIES SUDDENLY WEDNESDAY J.F. Bryant, Jr., prominent town and county citizen, died at his home in West Franklin Wednesday afternoon following a heart attack, the fourth he had sustained within less than a week, a severe seizure at the meeting of the Board of Supervisors in Courtland Monday causing grave concern among his fellow supervisors and county officers present. James Fenton Bryant, Jr., was born in Franklin October 13 1878, the son of the late Dr. James Fenton Bryant, one of our county’s leading citizens, and of Mrs. Gabrielle Barrett Bryant. Mr. Bryant was educated at Locustdale Academy in Orange County, at the Danville Military Institute, where he was Lieutenant and Adjutant in the cadet corps, at Randolph-Macon College, and the University of Virginia, being a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at the University. Mr. Bryant had operated a successful cotton ginning business here for many years and was extensively interested in farming. He had been a member of the Board of Supervisors of this county for 13 years, being appointed to that position by Judge Jas. L. McLemore following the death of C.C. Vaughan, Sr., in 1924, and succeeding himself for successive terms without opposition. He was vice-chairman of the Board and in his service was alert to the needs of his district and county, being especially interested in road construction and development. He was a charter member of the Franklin Rotary Club and of the local organization, Jefferson Davis Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans. On May 16, 1905, he married Miss Otelia Lee Gay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Gay, well-known Franklin citizen, who survives him with one son, Joe Gay Bryant. He is also survived by his step-mother, Mrs. C.C. Vaughan, Sr.; a half-sister, Mrs. Margaret Bryant Jones, besides a large and prominent family connection and a wide circle of friends throughout the county and State. Funeral services will be held from his late residence this (Friday) afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church, and burial will be made in the Gay family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery here. A quartette, W.O. Bogart, J. Edward Moyler, J. Edgar Weede and E.K. Brinkley, will sing "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" in the service from the home, and "Nearer, My God to Thee" during the committal rites. The active pallbearers will be: J.A. Johnson, G.G. McCann, Claude J. Edwards, Cecil Vaughan, 3rd, Harvey M. Holland of Suffolk, Harry T. Jones of Norfolk, W.T. Pace and Dr. J.C. Rawls. The honorary bearers will be the members of the Board of Supervisors: T.H. Barrett, chairman, L.W. McGrath, R.L. Grizzard, Dr. J.M. Bland, L.H. Babb, and J.L. Doughtie, and the following county officers: H.B. McLemore, Jr., Franklin Edwards, V.S. Pittman, T.B. Bell, Dr. P.P. Causey, Jno. M. Britt, Junius W. Pulley, Chas. W. Davis, F.F. Jenkins, G.B. Vick and E.A. Davis.
