A native of Southampton County, she was a daughter of James L. and Annie Scarbrough Ellis and a member of the Black Creek Baptist Church. She was the wife of Richard O. Brantley. Besides her husband and daughter, Mrs. Cross, she is survived by a second daughter, Miss Irene Brantley of Franklin; six sons, Clarence Owen Brantley of Newport News, Marvin E. Brantley, Calvin Brantley and Floyd Brantley of Franklin, Alfred Brantley, USN, of Panama, and Richard A. Brantley, USS Boston; her stepmother, Mrs. Etta Ellis of Zuni; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Vasser of California; two brothers, John Ellis of Newport News and Lyman Ellis of Bristol, Nenn.; three half-sisters, Mrs. Bertha Brown and Mrs. Ruby Beale of Zuni and Mrs. Myrtle Raiford of Franklin; three half-brothers, Carlton Ellis and Walter Ellis of Zuni and Joseph Ellis of Norfolk; and four grandchildren. The body was taken to the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home.
